The collaboration project “Phyllo” with Akinori Hamada Architects is being exhibited at the exhibition “The New Participants in Architecture”, organized by TOTO Gallery·MA.

The soil material used for shaping “Gorge” is a natural composition inspired by traditional Japanese earthen walls. Its form symbolizes a fusion of nature and artifact, derived through contemporary methods of scanning complex natural forms and editing them with 3D CAD.
Could a new design methodology emerge from the relationship between nature and technology? To explore this question, this work employs “phyllotaxis,” the geometric arrangement of leaves, to design parametric planters that connect people and plants. Inspired by “alternate phyllotaxis,” where leaves grow alternately, and “whorled phyllotaxis,” where leaves radiate from a single point, the design alows users to actively engage under the principles of nature.

The design and simulation are developed using the browser-based 3D modeling tool “Nodi,” with visualization of the process shown in the accompanying video.
